Intercom Pricing Per Seat, Intercom Pricing Plans, and Which Plan Includes Balanced Assignment
October 2026 · Assigner
Intercom pricing is per seat. Essential is $29 per seat per month billed annually ($39 monthly), Advanced is $85 ($99 monthly), and Expert is $132 ($139 monthly), plus $0.99 for every outcome the Fin AI agent resolves. Automatic assignment starts at Advanced with round robin. Balanced assignment, adjustable assignment limits and skills-based routing are Expert only, so for a support team that wants conversations shared by workload, the real Intercom price is $132 a seat, not $85.
Every price below was read on Intercom's public pricing page, including the structured data embedded in it, in October 2026, in USD. The routing details come from Intercom's own help center articles on balanced assignment, round robin, workload management and inbox assignment limits. Intercom runs pricing experiments, and some visitors currently see Essential at $19 instead of $29, so treat the Essential figure as the standard list price rather than a guarantee.
Intercom pricing per seat in 2026
A full seat is a person who talks to customers. Intercom requires a paid full seat for every teammate who replies to conversations or works tickets, with a minimum of one. Advanced and Expert include free Lite seats for internal collaborators who need to see conversations and leave notes but not reply. Essential has none, which matters more than it looks: on Essential, the account manager who wants to read a thread needs a full paid seat too.
| Plan | Billed annually, per seat per month | Billed monthly, per seat per month | Free Lite seats | Assignment it includes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $29 | $39 | None | Basic automation, shared inbox |
| Advanced | $85 | $99 | 20 | Round robin, Workflows, multiple team inboxes |
| Expert | $132 | $139 | 50 | Balanced assignment, workload management, inbox limits, skills-based routing |
Annual billing saves up to 35 percent on paper, but the gap is uneven. On Essential it is $10 a seat, on Advanced $14, and on Expert only $7. Self-serve monthly or annual plans are available on Essential and Advanced, and Intercom notes that downgrades usually take effect at renewal, so an annual Expert contract signed for a feature you later decide you do not need stays at $132 until the term ends.
The add-ons that change the bill
Seats are rarely the whole invoice. Fin, Intercom's AI agent, is charged at $0.99 per outcome, counted once per conversation when a customer confirms the issue is resolved, does not ask for more help after Fin answers, or when Fin completes a workflow, including a handoff to a human. That last condition surprises people: a conversation Fin hands to your team can still count as a billed outcome.
- Copilot, the agent-side AI assistant, is $29 per agent per month billed annually or $35 monthly for unlimited use. Every agent gets 10 Copilot conversations a month free.
- Proactive Support Plus is $99 a month for 500 messages, covering product tours, surveys, in-app messages, push and carousels. If all you want from it is collecting customer testimonials after a good support interaction, a dedicated tool for that job usually costs less than the add-on.
- Pro, the conversation analysis add-on, is $99 a month with 1,000 analyzed conversations and 2,000 credits, then $0.01 per extra credit.
- WhatsApp, SMS, email campaigns and phone are billed by usage on top.
There is a 14-day free trial with no credit card that includes every feature, Fin and the add-ons. That is useful for testing balanced assignment specifically, because the trial is the only time an Advanced buyer sees Expert routing before paying for it.
Which Intercom plan includes balanced assignment?
Only Expert. Intercom's balanced assignment article says it in one line: balanced assignment is only available on the Expert plan. The inbox assignment limits article says the same about per-inbox limits, and adds that those limits are only enforced for team inboxes set to balanced. Intercom's own learning center lists workload management as an Expert plan feature, and the pricing page describes skills-based routing as part of what enterprise teams get on Expert.
Advanced gives you round robin, the Workflows builder and multiple team inboxes. Essential has basic automation and a shared inbox, with no automatic distribution method. So the routing ladder is short: manual on Essential, rotation on Advanced, workload-aware assignment on Expert.
What round robin on Advanced will not do
Round robin is not a cheap version of balanced assignment. It is a different method, and Intercom documents its limits plainly. It assigns new conversations to active teammates in sequential order and does not account for a teammate's assignment limit. A conversation is assigned once, when it arrives in the team inbox; if the teammate is later unassigned, round robin does not run again. Conversations that arrive while every teammate is away are not assigned when people come back. Manually moved conversations do not trigger it, the rotation order cannot be customized, and Intercom warns that teammates who switch status often can make the rotation uneven.
Intercom itself recommends round robin for sales teams and balanced assignment for support. Our page on Intercom assignment rules and balanced assignment walks through how workflows, team inboxes and both methods fit together, and where conversations end up unassigned. On workspaces without workload management, the default assignment limit is 3 and cannot be changed. For a support team with a mix of quick questions and long technical threads, that is the practical reason teams on Advanced find one agent holding twelve open conversations while the next one holds two.
How balanced assignment decides, and its own gaps
On Expert, a teammate is eligible when they belong to the team inbox, their status is active, and their open conversations are below both their personal assignment limit and any inbox limit. Among eligible teammates, the conversation goes to the one with the fewest open conversations, and ties go to whoever has waited longest since their last assignment. The queue itself is ordered by priority, then by how close each conversation is to breaching its SLA, then by wait time. You can set separate limits for conversations and tickets, and separate limits for email and Messenger.
It is good, and it still leaks in documented ways:
- The Pull conversation button ignores the assignment limit and the teammate's away status, so a fast agent can pull past the limit.
- A snoozed conversation that reopens can stay with its original owner even when they are already at their limit, unless you turn on the setting that reassigns it.
- Phone calls bypass all assignment limits.
- The ticket assignment limit is still in beta and applies to all ticket types alike.
- Unassigned reasons are only shown for balanced-assignment teams.
What the routing upgrade costs for 8, 15 and 30 agents
The question most teams actually face is not Intercom versus something else. It is whether Advanced to Expert is worth $47 per seat per month on annual billing ($40 on monthly billing) when the feature you want is workload-aware assignment.
| Team size | Advanced, per year (annual) | Expert, per year (annual) | Upgrade cost per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 agents | $8,160 | $12,672 | $4,512 |
| 15 agents | $15,300 | $23,760 | $8,460 |
| 30 agents | $30,600 | $47,520 | $16,920 |
Seat cost only, before Fin outcomes, Copilot and add-ons. If you also need SAML SSO, custom roles, SLAs, HIPAA support or multiple brands, Expert is the right plan anyway and the routing comes along with it. If balanced assignment is the only Expert feature you would use, you are paying $564 per agent per year for one capability.
Is the Early Stage discount a way around it?
Not for routing. Intercom's Early Stage program is for companies with under $10 million raised, fewer than 15 employees and no existing Intercom account, at 93 percent off in year one, 50 percent in year two and 25 percent in year three. The bundle is built on Advanced seats, so it includes round robin but not balanced assignment. It is a good deal for a startup, and it will not solve uneven distribution.
A cheaper way to get workload-aware assignment
If your team is small, works the same hours and handles conversations of similar length, round robin on Advanced is fine. Watch the open conversation count per agent for two weeks; if the spread stays narrow, do not upgrade.
If the spread is wide, there are two honest options. Upgrade to Expert, which also brings SLAs and SSO. Or keep Advanced and let a routing layer make the who-gets-it decision. Round robin ticket assignment that checks availability and load is what Assigner does across help desks, and our page on support ticket routing walks through the rule set. Load-balanced routing is on the Assigner Team plan at $18 per user per month billed yearly, so 15 agents cost $3,240 a year against the $8,460 Expert upgrade, with capacity caps, skills and a recorded reason for every assignment. Assigner does not replace Intercom's inbox, Fin or SLAs, and it does not guarantee response times.
For the same decision on other help desks, see Zendesk round robin ticket assignment, Freshdesk pricing per user, HubSpot ticketing system pricing and Help Scout pricing plans, where balanced routing needs Pro with a 10 user minimum.

No. Intercom's help center says balanced assignment is only available on the Expert plan, and inbox assignment limits also require Expert. Without workload management, the default assignment limit is 3 and cannot be changed.

How much does Intercom Fin cost?
$0.99 per outcome, charged once per conversation when the customer confirms resolution, does not ask for more help after Fin responds, or when Fin completes a workflow, including a handoff to your team.
Does Intercom have a free trial?
Yes, 14 days with no credit card, including all features, Fin and the add-ons. It is the only way to test Expert routing before buying it.
