Freshdesk Ticket Assignment: Auto-Assign and Round-Robin Tickets by Skill and Load

Freshdesk round-robin drops each ticket on the next agent in line, whether or not they are swamped or the right fit, and skill-based routing sits behind higher plans. Assigner adds fair, load-aware ticket assignment beside Freshdesk, using rules you control, so no agent is buried and none cherry-picks the easy tickets.

In short

Freshdesk ticket assignment is the way incoming tickets get handed to agents, and Freshdesk offers round-robin and load-based options natively, with skills-based and more advanced routing (Omniroute) gated to higher plans. The common complaints are that plain round-robin ignores who is actually available or overloaded, and that skill routing costs a tier jump. Assigner sits beside Freshdesk and adds fair assignment across all three: it routes each ticket by skill, current workload, and availability using rules you set (round-robin, weighted round-robin, load-balanced, skill-based, or priority), then shows exactly why each agent was chosen. It applies the same engine to leads and ops tasks, so you are not buying a separate router for each. It is self-serve from $12/user/mo, and it is a companion that helps you route, not a live two-way sync into your Freshdesk instance; the demo data shown is illustrative. The AI assists, the rules stay yours, and nothing about the outcome is guaranteed.

// THE FIT

Why it fits

Support and CX leads on Freshdesk who want fair, load-aware, skill-based ticket assignment beside their help desk, without upgrading tiers for advanced routing.

Past plain round-robin

Native Freshdesk round-robin ignores load and fit. Assigner weights rotation by capacity, skill, and availability, so tickets land where they can actually be worked.

Skill routing without a tier jump

Get skill-based ticket assignment beside Freshdesk without upgrading to the plan that unlocks advanced routing, self-serve from $12/user/mo.

Every assignment shows why

Each ticket names the rule and reason it fired, so triage is auditable instead of a black box. Assigner is a companion designed to help, not a guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

How do I enable round robin ticket assignment in Freshdesk?

Go to Admin, then Team, then Groups, edit the group you want, turn on Automatic Ticket Assignment, and choose Round Robin as the mode. Tickets then go to available agents in that group in circular order. Automatic Ticket Assignment is only available on the Freshdesk Pro and Enterprise tiers, so accounts on lower plans cannot switch it on at all.

What Freshdesk plan do you need for automatic ticket assignment?

Pro or Enterprise. Automatic Ticket Assignment, which covers round robin and load-based modes, is not available on the lower Freshdesk tiers, and skill-based assignment is Enterprise only. Omniroute, the advanced routing option, starts at Pro. For teams that only need better assignment, that tier jump is often the whole reason to add a routing layer beside Freshdesk instead.

What is the difference between round robin and load-based assignment in Freshdesk?

Round robin gives each available agent the next ticket in turn regardless of what they already hold. Load-based assignment looks at agent capacity and sends the ticket to whoever has room. Load-based handles the realistic case where one agent is holding three escalations and another just cleared their queue, which strict rotation cannot see.

Can you route Freshdesk tickets by skill without the Enterprise plan?

Not natively, since Freshdesk gates skill-based assignment to Enterprise. A routing layer that sits beside Freshdesk can apply skill, workload, and availability rules without changing your plan. Assigner does this from $12 per user per month and runs the same engine over leads and ops tasks, so one set of fairness rules covers all your incoming work.
