Jobber Dispatch and Job Assignment Rules for Field Service Teams
Jobber gives a dispatcher a clear schedule and several ways to put a person on a visit. What the help center describes is a person choosing, one visit, one job or one crew at a time. That works at three technicians and strains at fifteen. This page shows how Jobber assignment works, where the manual step starts to cost money, and how a routing layer picks the owner for you.
In short
Jobber assigns work by hand. A dispatcher opens a visit and picks a team member, assigns people to a whole job so every visit inherits them, reassigns several visits at once, or sends a crew. Unassigned visits show a red icon. The help center describes no rule that chooses a technician by workload or skill. A routing layer such as Assigner does that choosing and records why.
Why it fits
For an owner or office manager running a field service business on Jobber, with five to thirty technicians, who spends the first hour of every day putting people on jobs, sees the same two technicians overloaded, or loses visits to the Unassigned list, and who wants to know whether automatic assignment is worth paying for.
Assignment is a dispatcher decision
Per visit, per job or per crew, a person decides. The by team member schedule view is built for exactly that, so one dispatcher can see every day side by side. The weak point is that the same person is the bottleneck every morning.
Job level assignment is inherited
Assigning people on the job puts them on every visit in it. That is convenient for a recurring route and wrong when a repeat client needs a different skill on visit three.
Crews are one at a time
Crew scheduling groups people so you can assign them together, and a team member can belong to only one crew at a time. Crews fit fixed teams. They do not help when you want the least loaded available person.
Unassigned work needs a watcher
A visit with nobody on it shows the red Unassigned icon, and someone has to notice. At volume, the cost is the visit that sits unassigned until a customer calls.
A routing layer makes the choice
Assigner decides the owner from round robin, weighted rotation, load balancing, skills and live availability, using shift schedules and time off, and records the reason for every assignment. It sits beside Jobber and does not replace it.

How work gets to a technician in Jobber and with a routing layer
| Method | Who decides | Best for | Where it strains |
|---|---|---|---|
| Assign a single visit | Dispatcher | One off jobs and fixes | Every visit is a manual click |
| Assign people on the job | Dispatcher, once per job | Recurring routes with the same crew | Every visit inherits the same people |
| Reassign multiple visits | Dispatcher | Sick days and route changes | Still a human choosing the new owner |
| Crew scheduling | Dispatcher picks the crew | Fixed teams that always work together | One crew per person at a time, no load view |
| Compare schedules for open time | Dispatcher reads availability | Finding a free slot | Reading availability is the work you want to remove |
| Assigner beside Jobber | Rules you own, reason recorded | Volume, specialists, uneven loads | Configuration work to connect, not a one click native app |
Based on the Jobber help center articles on assigning visits, job basics and crew scheduling, read November 8, 2026. Jobber has a legacy and a newer schedule, so menus differ by account.
In detail
Make Jobber assignment less of a morning chore
Count the minutes before you buy anything
Time one week of dispatch. If your office spends 45 minutes a day deciding who goes where, that is about 3.75 hours a week. At a loaded cost of $30 an hour that is roughly $5,800 a year, more than an Assigner Starter plan for ten users at $840 a year. If it is 10 minutes a day, stay manual.
Use job level assignment for routes that never change
A weekly lawn route or a fixed cleaning crew is the right case for assigning people on the job once. Keep those in Jobber and take them out of the daily decision.
Separate routine work from judgment work
Most incoming requests are routine and can follow a rule, such as the least loaded technician with the right trade who is on shift. A dispatcher should spend the time on the exceptions, the emergency and the key account.
Write down the rule you already use in your head
Every dispatcher has one. Closest tech first, never double book the new hire, keep the electrician for panel work. If you can say it in a sentence, a router can run it and show the reason for each pick.
Where Assigner fits beside Jobber
Assigner chooses an owner using round robin, weighted rotation, load balancing, skills and live availability, with shift schedules and time off, and shows why each person was chosen. It does not replace the Jobber schedule, invoicing or client hub. It is priced per user, so you pay for people who receive work.
Test with last week's jobs
Replay a recent week. Count visits that went to someone on leave, specialist jobs that went to a generalist and the gap between your busiest and lightest technician. If those are small, manual dispatch is fine.
Questions buyers ask
Frequently asked questions
Does Jobber automatically assign jobs to technicians?
The help center describes manual assignment. A dispatcher assigns a visit, a whole job, several visits at once or a crew. It describes no rule that picks a technician by workload or skill, so confirm in your own account before relying on one.
How do you assign a team member to a job in Jobber?
Open the visit, click Edit, choose Assign and pick the team member. Assigning on the job applies the person to every visit in it. On the legacy schedule you can also reassign several visits at once.
Can a Jobber team member be in more than one crew?
No. The help center says a team member can belong to only one crew at a time, and crew scheduling is described as available in Jobber Online and not yet in the app.
What does the red Unassigned icon in Jobber mean?
A visit with no team member shows a red Unassigned icon in the team section of the visit details. Someone has to assign it, so teams with volume add a daily check or a router that never leaves a visit empty.
Is automatic job assignment worth it for a small field service team?
Under about five technicians, usually not. A dispatcher can see everything. It starts to pay when dispatch takes an hour a day, loads are uneven or visits go unassigned. Time a week before you buy.
What does Assigner cost beside Jobber?
Assigner Starter is $7 per user per month billed yearly with a five user minimum, so ten users is $840 a year. Higher plans add more rule types and integrations.
